OUR SCHOOLS WORK
‘Financial Education forms part of the school curriculum and research has shown the positive impact that it can have on the financial literacy of children and young people.’
CAP Guides – Money for 9 to 11 year olds
Money for 14 to 16 year olds
Money for 14 to 16 year olds
SCPA delivers CAP (Christians Against Poverty) designed financial education courses in local schools across the Suffolk coastal area (postcode areas IP12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and NR34) free of charge.
We are able to deliver two courses, one for Years 5 and 6 and the other for Years 10 and 11 that meet the requirements in the National Curriculum for Financial Education, teaching the pupils essential money skills through interactive activities, games and real-life scenarios. The sessions are lead by trained volunteers and a dedicated Schools Coordinator, all who have classroom experience.

CAP MONEY KIDS for Years 5 and 6
CAP Money Kids is delivered as two 2-hour sessions

In these sessions, the pupils work in small groups on various tasks, including discussion opportunities, games, stories, problem solving and practical tasks. Through these tasks they learn about the different ways that children and adults can earn money, understand that people are paid in different ways. Identify the difference between a need and a want and understand the terms income, expenditure, saving and giving.
The pupils have the opportunity to create and balance a budget, and to choose how and where that budget is spent. They explore how the different ways they can spend the money, using a debit card, a credit card and cash.

Through the jar game the pupils learn the importance of saving, both short and long term; and that saving is not always easy.

They develop an understanding of the impact that debt can have, along with being aware of the help and support which is available.
CAP MONEY YOUTH for Years 10 and 11
CAP Money Youth is delivered as a 1-hour session – it can be run in Youth Groups or in schools.
The session teaches young people how to budget through a scenario of a 17 year old, focusing on income, expenditure and the importance of savings.

Using a budgeting tool the young people have the opportunity to put together a financial plan, which helps them to understand the benefits of living with a budget and the different ways to get a budget to balance. It will help them to recognise that money is limited and that we have to think carefully about how and where we spend it. They will have the opportunity to create their own budget.
OUR SCHOOLS WORK TO DATE
We first started offering financial education in schools in 2022 when we were commissioned by Suffolk County Council to offer classes in the schools of East Suffolk. In 2025 we employed a Schools Co-ordinator, Helen Peats to run the programme, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, all of have classroom experience.
In the past year, we have had the pleasure to visit 15 Primary Schools across our catchment area, working with over 400 pupils.
