Food session in a Life Skills course

Some people come to the CAP Life Skills course for the cooking!

The session is called ‘Cooking on a Budget’.

We start with Healthy Eating, using the Eatwell Guide and Food Labels -Red, Amber and Green-, consider the value of planning meals, which informs our shopping lists, then provide recipes for cheap but nutritious meals in a recipe folder for each course member. We provide a list of money-saving tips when shopping, such as ‘Don’t shop when you’re hungry!’.

Thanks to kind funding from the Rope Trust, each member who needs one receives a new slow cooker. During the session they prepare a vegetarian recipe and take it home to cook, choosing whether or not to add meat. The slow cooker is theirs to use, a welcome low energy cooking device!
