SCPA Debt Services

Suffolk Coastal Poverty Action offers Debt Advice to those experiencing unmanageable debt in partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) who are a nationwide Award-Winning Charity. You can access this service by calling Laura Knight on 07942 359865 or emailing help@scpa.uk and we’ll arrange an initial appointment with a CAP Debt Coach from your local area. Here at Suffolk Coastal Poverty Action we cover the area from just outside Ipswich up to the borders of Waveney, (specifically IP postcodes beginning 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 & NR34).

When you first make contact, we will enquire whether you need urgent support to deal with an immediately impending crisis. If so, we will ask one of our First Responders to visit you to assess your immediate needs and provide guidance or practical assistance or signposting (if the problem is one for which there is a better specialised service provider).

At the First Appointment, one of our authorised Debt Coaches will meet you and get to know you before starting to help you organise the search for any paperwork you have to do with your debts. These will need to be gathered ready for our second visit.

Our second visit is the Fact Find Appointment, where we sort through all the paperwork and send it off to CAP’s head office. Its trained debt counsellors will work out a realistic budget that prioritises your essential bills and will negotiate affordable payments with each creditor and attempt to stop unfair interest and charges where possible. They will then draw up your own personal budget and the best route out of debt for you.

The next appointment is the Budget Appointment. It is at this appointment that your Debt Coach will give you a personalised budget, a Financial Statement and explain the routes out of debt that are available to you. Your debt coach will make sure that you understand the different routes and you can choose the one that is best suited to you.  We will then support you through this process until you are debt free.

You will have a Debt Advice team at CAP’s head office to support as well as your Debt Coach and a Befriender.  A Befriender is someone (usually from your local community) who can walk alongside you through the whole CAP process all the way until you are Debt-free.

At every appointment you will be offered prayer for your situation however it is your choice if you would like this or not.
